A day in the nature reserves of Monterufoli- Caselli can teach a lot to chidren and adults. It is situated in the centre of the Colline Metallifere (Metal hills) and extends itself around the hills of Poggio di Acquaferrata (324 metres), Poggio di Carnovale (508 metres), Poggio Gabbra (558 metres), Monte Alto (501 metres) and it is crossed by the streams Sterza, Trossa, Ritasso, Secolo and by many ditches. The nature reserve of “Berignone” extends itself around the Soldano mountain (556 metres) and Poggio Alessandro. It is a territory almost entirely covered by woods which spreads over the Upper Val di Cecina in the communes of Volterra and for a smaller part of Pomarance. The area is crossed by two streams Sellate and Fosci, while the river Cecina marks its southern border; other important natural areas are the valley of the river Pavone and the forest of Tatti , which are situated on the border of the reserve.
